The Blessings Animals Give Us
Every year, Friends of
Roman Cats (FORC) gives its
annual party to celebrate "The Blessings Animals Give
Us".
It is based on a centuries-old Italian festival, "The Blessing of The
Animals" which takes place on the feast day of St.Anthony
Abbot, the
patron saint of domestic animals. While it used to be that
farmers would bring their donkeys, goats and geese to be blessed, now
companion animals receive a blessing, as well.
The 2nd Annual Blessings
Party took place on January 25, 2003, and was attended by over 40
people ... here are some of the people
who joined us.

October
In the fall of 2003,
Susan
traveled to Rome and worked with the Torre Argentina Sanctuary to start
a socialization program for kittens that
come into the shelter. She also spent time, along with a friend,
Lucia
Lodolini, who works at Torre Argentina, planning and putting on a
wine-tasting fundraiser,
called “The Night of The Black Cat” or “La Notte del Gatto Nero”.
It was a
great evening. Susan also
checked out cat sites in Florence, Arezzo and Venice in anticipation of
the upcoming "Cats and Culture" tour.
She
also met with Dr.
Dorothea Friz, the extraordinary veterinarian working near
Naples. FORC has known of Dr Friz’s work spaying,
neutering
and micro chipping dogs and cats in a number of locations in Southern
Italy. She is also the vet who is making the world aware of the
cruel killing of infant
male buffalo calves that are considered ‘collateral damage’ in the
production of the famed Mozzarella di Bufala cheese.
As a result of the
meeting, FORC voted to send a total of 52 humane
cat traps to help Dr Friz with her work. Friends of
Roman Cats now has 52 traps in Italy, all in use catching free-ranging
cats for spay/neuter.

February - April
"Friends
of Roman Cats" continues to expand its scope: In February FORC
participated in the inspiring Cat Pride march held in Rome.
The
marchers asked for more
services
for cats (currently the municipality does almost nothing) and more
respect for the people who care for homeless and feral cats.
Though no one from FORC could attend personally, we sent a banner that
was carried in the march. This event attracted 2,000 to 6,000 marchers
and innumerable spectators. It received media coverage, both on
CNN and in numerous American newspapers, including the San Francisco
Chronicle.
In
April, Lynn Coulston, Mary Kennedy and Susan Wheeler attended the "No
More
Homeless Pets Conference" that was held in Southern California.
Michael Mountain, the head of "Best Friends Animal Sanctuary," the
group
that put on the conference, mentioned the Italian no-kill law in his
keynote
speech. Word is getting around.
Also in
April, the FORC Board
voted to
develop an Italian tour for the fall of 2004 entitled, "Cats and
Culture, an Italian Holiday". This will be a 14-day tour of
Italian cities such as
Venice, Florence and Rome. It will combine visiting some of the
major cultural treasures of Italy with visits to some of the most
important
cat sanctuaries and colonies. Please look for more on the tour
on our website in a month or so.
You may also get in touch with FORC by sending a letter of inquiry
to: Friends of Roman Cats, PO Box 12571, San Francisco, CA,

Our
Second Annual Celebration of the
"Blessings Animals Give Us"
On
Saturday, January 25, 2003, FORC celebrated our second "Blessings
Animals Give
Us" event. It was a joyous event, with tables overflowing with Italian
antipasti and drinks. Over 40 people attended and we received
notes
and contributions from a number of people who could not attend, but who
were with us in spirit. We took time out from the fun to spend
some
time thinking about the special animals in our lives, animals who
enrich
us and nourish us with their love and companionship.

We
had many wonderful donations of items to our silent auction, everything
from restaurant meals and wine, original art, jewelry and gift
certificates, to tickets to local sporting events. We also had an
auction basket filled with Italian delicacies that a great number of
people seemed interested in.
We
thank all those who attended, all those who helped, and all those who
donated items to support our projects to help cats both in Italy and in
the United States. Special thanks to our treasurer, Lisa Ennis,
who generated numerous forms, created the lovely invitations and kept
the whole effort on track. Thanks to Susan Wheeler, Mary Kennedy
and Pam Carroll for finding so many wonderful donors and for setting up
the event, thanks to Lisa Camasi, of our Advisory Board, for helping
the day of the party in
a number of capacities, and finally thanks to Michael Clarke who, along
with Mary and Susan cooked the food for the party.
Below
is a list of all those who donated items to the party. Please
thank those with businesses by supporting them. They are all
wonderful friends of animals.
